4 Things- Something hilarious, something cool, something I’m looking forward to, and something I would definitely do!

Hi friends! I’m having a blah period week with low energy and no motivation. How are you? School is wrapping up, and as a homeschool mom, I am ready to take a break for summer! Here are a few things to inspire you or make you laugh if you, like me, need a little boost this week.

Something hilarious

I would call this the funniest video reel I’ve ever seen. I could watch it over and over, and I do watch it over and over. His timing and expressions are spot on.

Something cool

Do you ever watch Architecture Digest home tours? I have watched so many! These are three of my favorites. I love a mostly neutral palette. How about you?

Mandy Moore

Alicia Keyes

David Harbour

Something I’m looking forward to

I love watching romantic comedies, dramas, and series, and Nick Robinson is my celebrity crush. I’m glad he’s back from his bad boy roles (Maid and Damsel), and back doing romance! I loved him in Everything, Everything and Love, Simon. So looking forward to this one-

Something I would definitely do

My brother sent me this on Tik Tok. Would you ever consider doing it???!! I think it would make a fabulous date night or girl’s night out! What do you think!?

Ok off to bed! Good night!

If you don’t marry a man who’s BORING, you’re doing it wrong.

My BEST piece of relationship advice from someone who wrote a relationship column for ten years, wrote a relationship book for teenage girls, and has been happily married for fifteen years-

If you don’t marry a man who’s (errs on the side of) BORING, you’re doing it wrong.

You know what’s boring?

Responsible is boring — takes duties and actions seriously

Slow to anger is boring— not easily angered

Reliable is boring   — can be trusted to work well consistently

Dutiful is boring — can be counted on

Calm is boring — emotionally steady, not anxious

Even-keeled is boring— stable temperament

Unflappable is boring— not easily upset or stressed

Composed is boring— controlled and self-possessed

Secure is boring — psychologically stable, not anxious/insecure

Stable is boring — emotionally consistent

Relaxed is boring — low tension or worry

Self-assured is boring— confident without anxiety

Resilient is boring — recovers well from stress

Phlegmatic is boring— calm temperament

Well-adjusted is boring — psychologically healthy and functional

Date exciting, fine. But please, please, please, if you want an amazing life, marry boring.

4 things that have made life more streamlined, more meaningful, more fun, and more delightful lately

I have renewed my commitment to waking up early, so today, I got up with Nate at 5 am, and after my prayer and Bible reading time, I’m writing! Life in the Heckman household has been hard the last week with both boys getting sick back to back, and as it is, there are so many bad things happening in the world. So, I wanted to do a little post to help share some things currently making more streamlined, meaningful, fun, and delightful as of late.

More delightful- This movie

I love a movie I can enjoy with Nate and then immediately text my mother-in-law, “You gotta watch this movie!” This is one of those kinds of movies. Thanks to my friend Tory for the suggestion! Side note- I love having a friend who has the exact same taste in movies and series as me. Anytime we like a movie or show, we text each other. It’s one of the small, quiet glimmers of having a girl friend who shares something in common with you. Speaking of friendship…

More meaningful- This podcast

This podcast episode delves deep into the benefits of friendship, the different kinds of friendships, and most importantly, ways to be a better friend and deepen your friendships. I don’t typically like podcasts where just one person is talking to the audience, but Arthur Brooks is the exception. As a Harvard professor, he does his podcasts like a lecture, being very science-based, well-researched, and organized. You can tell his podcasts are outlined, and he’s not just talking in stream of consciousness. He gets straight to the point and speaks quickly and persuasively. I love all his work.

More fun- This activity

How cute is this idea! My kids are constantly giving me tiny little flowers that I never know what to do with, and this is the perfect whimsical solution!

More streamlined- This chore/schoolwork system

Ok first, God is so good because unbeknownst to me, I married someone who is constantly improving my life on his own initiative.

Remember my sad chore chart?

I had to erase things and rewrite things every night because not every chore or schoolwork item happened everyday. Well, Nate is a genius. He wrote every possible option in wet erase marker (harder to remove) and then in dry erase marker (easier to remove) I just have to outline in red or blue (on the left side) so the boys know it’s something that needs to be done that day. Then they just fill in the square when they’ve completed it. If the item isn’t framed in red or blue, it’s not something that needs to be done that day.

I guess the point is to marry someone who makes your life infinitely easier, not harder! 😂🥰Love this meme-

So true!!

So what’s making your week better? I’d love to know!

Mother’s Day, what makes the best compliments, and a funny shirt

Back in 2019!! Oh how the time flies!

The best compliments are specific! This was my favorite Mother’s Day card I’ve received in the 10 years I’ve been a mom, because it was so specific. 🥹

“Thank you mom for being outgoing, thank you mom for having some humor, and thank you mom for keeping me safe.”

If you’re a mom, how was your Mother’s Day? Did you celebrate your mom?

My 7 year old son, Luke, wore this shirt all day and it made me chuckle. 🤭

He also had a very sweet card.

Since I homeschool my boys and they are young and in my business 24/7 😂, I like to get away on Mother’s Day. So this year it was a hike with new friends and a lunch date with my brother. Nate got me a new robe I’m loving from Amazon. Apparently my current robe is too short. Oops. Hope you’re having a great start to your week, and thanks for reading!

A Valentine’s Day gift guide for her

Valentine’s Day is just around the corner! Do you celebrate? I always love to gift myself something. 🤣 Nate and I are going to brunch while my brother Allan babysits the boys and then Nate is taking the boys and I to motocross. Not my thing, but everyone else is excited!

Here are some lovely things I’m eyeing on my wish list-

A luxurious after makeup spray full of moisture and antioxidants that’s just made of grape water because winter leaves her face feeling tight and parched

Grape water by the French
brand Caudalie

This little luxury is one of those things that feels too extra to just up and buy for yourself. It’s not a toner, serum, cream, or face wash. It’s just luxurious. The best gifts are those that people can’t rationalize getting for themselves but when they are gifted said luxurious, unnecessary item, it feels special!

The most luxurious, coziest, thickest, most substantial house slippers because her feet are always cold

Ugg Scuffette II, the Michelin Star of house slippers?

Have you met a woman whose feet aren’t always cold? I have not. Have you met a woman who would spend $100 on a pair of house slippers? I have not. This is why there’s a need here you see. I was once gifted a pair of luxurious house slippers, better than anything I’d ever owned before, and it was the most amazing treat to be able to retire my former house slippers for the unexpected upgrade!

Dainty every day earrings she can wear around the house and feel cute even in her yoga attire and sweats

The daintiest plumeria studs in silver, gold, or rose gold

How adorable are these studs? I love the idea of a daily earrings that you automatically throw on every day. These would make me smile every time I saw them.

A trinket dish for her to put on her night stand that reminds her what’s really going on in your mind every day

A forever love note at her bedside

She will need an adorable trinket dish to house said daily earrings right? How cute is this red one with the words, “Spent all day thinking of you.” (Swoon!)

An elegant electric candle warmer with the most amazing candle scent so she doesn’t have a fire risk and she can enjoy her candles much longer

This elegant candle warmer with this candle.

Did you know lighting a candle actually releases soooo many terrible toxins? Stop lighting candles and start warming them! It’s much safer, less toxic, and the fragrance lasts longer.

Movie guide for the couple who can’t find something they both want to watch: He likes thrillers, she likes romance, and they both can do some sci-fi if the plot moves quickly

Ok this post is ultra specific I know 🤣, but if that happens to be you and your partner, check out these three movies my hubby and I have all loved!

The Gorge

This movie’s premise is so inventive! It is exactly all the things we love- romance, thriller, and sci-fi! Not a dull moment here. You’re sitting on the edge of your seat waiting for the next moment. Also isn’t Anya Taylor-Joy just so captivating to watch? Been obsessed with her since The Queen’s Gambit.

Passengers

Another romance sci-fi combo with an inventive premise! Notice a theme here? 😛 I love Jennifer Lawrence in anything as well. Loved this movie so much!

Ex Machina

This is the only one I would not categorize as romance but is definitely sci-fi. It also has no dull moments. Every second moves the story along. The ending gahhh! Ok, not going to spoil this one, but I’ll just say I still think about this ending to this day.

3 ideas for a stay at home date night

For those of us on the no spend or low spent route, I thought I’d share some of my favorite things to do with hubby at home for a date night! What I’ve realized is that while it’s lovely to have a date night away, the point is that we just want to connect in a more meaningful way and have some quality time having fun together. just the two do us.

So while the boys are doing their tv time, once a week we do some of the following-

1. Play one of our favorite two player board games

This is Lost Cities!

Nate’s favorite is Cribbage. Mine are Dutch Blitz and Lost Cities! Have you played any of these?

Dutch Blitz you both are playing quickly at the same time. It gets very competitive, very quickly and there always ends up being raucous laughter about someone illegally doing girl on girl or boy on boy plays. This is not one of those kinds of games, but if you’ve played the game, you know 🤣

Lost Cities is such a fun two player game. It’s not a fast play like Dutch Blitz. It involves a lot of strategy. After we learned to play this game, we played it every night for months! Both these games are so addictive.

2. Share one thing you both appreciate about each other this week and take turns answering two questions from this card deck

This is my friend Sabrina’s point! I’ve been wanting to buy those physical card decks on Amazon for couples but Sabrina told me about this free app from the Gottman Institute! It has so many questions! My favorite is going on the love maps and making it like a game- read the question and try to guess what your partner will answer and they do the same for you. It’s a fun, see how well we know each other game. This is great if you or your partner are “quality time” love language people.

The “share one thing you appreciate about each other” bit is great if you or your partner are “words of affirmation” love language people. Those are my top two! These were Sabrina’s ideas. So thankful for good ideas from friends. It takes a village to raise a marriage apparently. 🤣

3. Watch a good show or movie together

I don’t know about you, but I don’t watch anything really dark without Nate, but shows or movies that keep me on the edge of my seat or are “who done it” kinda thrillers are perfect to watch with a guy to cuddle with. He much prefers it to my regular teen movie or romantic comedy pick. 🤣

These four picks are the best shows we’ve watched together.

The best relationship advice I ever got from my best friend, the best floss for people who actually enjoy flossing, and Dry Conditioner-it’s a thing!

The best relationship advice I ever got from my best friend

My best friend is so sexy without trying to be. She has a natural flirtatious way of just being which I highly, highly admire because she just is that way without even trying. She oozes sensuality without being vulgar, and I think it’s because she just enjoys being a woman and her feminine confidence makes her super attractive. I admire this trait so much because I’m someone who doesn’t feel comfortable with being seen as sexy in any way (at least in public 😉) Being short and always being called cute, that’s what I’m comfortable with. Some of the best piece of relationship advice I’ve ever gotten is from my bestie! Here, check it out-

Follow me on tik tok for more relationship/dating advice!
The best floss for people who enjoy flossing

I know this only applies to very few people, BUT I have met other flossing enthusiasts so I know I’m not alone! I’m one of those crazy people dentists love. I cannot fall asleep at night without brushing and flossing my teeth and I enjoy flossing. I used to find unwaxed floss at stores, but it is getting harder and harder to find this variety. See, the problem with waxed floss is that it doesn’t get everything. It’s like rubbing two plastic bags together-there is no friction. You need friction to get gunk out of your teeth. Since it’s nearly impossible to find unwaxed (more friction!) floss at your local grocery store or Target, I’ve started buying my floss online. Dr Tung’s is my favorite! It stretches! It tastes great! It also isn’t smooth and really has that rope like friction you don’t get from regular store waxed floss. If you try it, let me know what you think!

Dry Conditioner-It’s a thing!

Dry shampoos have been around for a while, but did you know that there is dry conditioner!!!??? Dry shampoos are for oily scalps, while dry conditioners are for the lengths of hair or to get out any food or other smells. Great for the ladies or guys! I know my brother hates the smell of food on his clothes or hair. This fixes that. This one is also acne safe for anyone who has acne prone skin. I check all my products for pore clogging ingredients using this list by Emme Diane, a esthetician that specializes in acne prone skin. It has seriously changed my skin just making sure all my skin and hair products don’t contain any of those acne causing ingredients. I say skin and hair because nobody wants bacne or scalp acne either!

Anyways, just some random fun things I’m loving! I hope you have a great weekend. I woke up super early this morning and reminded myself that it’s a treat to wake up early, because I am a morning person. I also sat in a sticky dining room seat and a propped my elbow on a sticky dining room table, but that’s what comes with two boys. It’s a sticky, maple syrupy kind of season, and I’m here for it. Have a great weekend!
